The 5 Best Directors Of Modern Cinema

Who are the 5 best directors of modern cinema? This is a question I get asked a lot. But to be honest, there’s not really such thing as “the 5 best directors of modern cinema”. You see, I think the term “modern cinema” is rather vague. An artist’s works can’t just be judged based on which time period they came from because it doesn’t make sense. So instead of just throwing out some names and calling it a day, I wanted to take more time to break things down for you.

1. David Fincher

David Fincher is an American film director who has made some of the most acclaimed films in modern cinema. His work, including Seven (1995), Fight Club (1999), Zodiac (2007) and The Social Network (2010), have been praised as some of the best modern examples of their genres, particularly psychological thrillers and neo-noir mysteries.

It’s hard to overstate how influential Fincher has been on modern cinema. His slick, stylish approach to dark subject matter has influenced countless filmmakers and made him one of the most recognizable directors working today.

Here are the five best David Fincher movies:

Fight Club Fincher’s second studio film was a huge risk for Fox Studios. Adapting Chuck Palahniuk’s cult novel Fight Club meant turning one of the decade’s most violent stories into a gritty action movie with a twist ending. The final result is an intense, disturbing and subversive film that explores toxic masculinity and what it means to be a man in America during the Clinton Era.

Zodiac Zodiac is based on a true story — the hunt for the Zodiac killer, a serial killer who terrorized San Francisco in the 1960s and 1970s. Fincher’s adaptation is a dense, sprawling epic that works

2. Michael Bay

The 5 Best Directors Of Modern Cinema

When you mention the greatest filmmakers of modern cinema, you’re almost always going to hear about the likes of Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg and sometimes even Quentin Tarantino. And although their contribution to cinema has been tremendous, there are other directors whose work is just as good (if not better) than these cinematic masterpieces.

These directors have made some of the most memorable films in the past few decades — from mind-boggling suspense thrillers to heart-wrenching dramas. They have all directed at least five feature films that I consider essential viewing for any film buff.

Here’s my list of the five best directors of modern cinema, in no particular order.

3. Martin Scorsese

The list of great directors with the most celebrated filmographies is long and distinguished, but it’s still possible to rank them. Here are the five best directors of modern cinema.

Martin Scorsese

At the top of the list is Martin Scorsese, who has made some of the most memorable movies in cinema history. He’s also one of the most influential filmmakers working today and many consider him to be one of the most important American directors ever.

The list of great films he’s either directed or produced is staggering: “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” “Goodfellas,” “Casino,” “Gangs of New York,” and “The Departed.”

4. Christopher Nolan

Christopher Nolan is the best director of modern cinema. Christopher Nolan doesn’t make bad movies.

It’s a bold statement to make, but it’s absolutely true. I can think of no other filmmaker who has had as much success in such a short period of time as Christopher Nolan. The man made his feature film debut in 1998 with ‘Following’, which was only his second film ever. His first film was ‘Doodlebug’, which was released in 1997 and cost $6,000 to make.

5. George Lucas

George Lucas is the creator of Star Wars and one of the most successful film directors in history. He’s also a huge fan of old-school Hollywood.

Lucas’ own work has often been critiqued for its lack of subtlety, so it’s interesting to see who he puts on his list of directors he admires most.

“I just love movies,” Lucas says. “It’s a great medium, it’s art, it’s literature, it’s music — all rolled into one. And there are some great filmmakers out there.”

Takeaway: These directors have made some of the best movies of modern cinema.
